5 questions for Virginie Dedieu, synchronised swimming champion

Virginie, how did you get into synchronised swimming?

Virginie Dedieu: “I got into synchronised swimming by accident. I was looking for a ballet class and it was when I was talking to my contemporary dance teacher that I learnt of synchronised swimming.

So I went near where I lived, in Aix-en-Provence to take a test. I was hooked right away. So I started synchronised swimming as well as dance. I did these two sports for a really long time. Dance and synchronised swimming are very close, but I believe that I feel even freer in the water, with no constraints of gravity.”

A French team champion in 2018 in your most recent participation in a competition, what relationship do you have with synchronised swimming today?

V.D.: “Alongside my job as an interior designer, synchronised swimming is still very present in my life, but doesn’t have the same place any more. I train and swim regularly. For example I take my two sons to the swimming pool for training so that I can get into the water too. I always take part in the two annual galas in my club, Aix-en-Provence, and sometimes I participate in championships, but most of the time as support. I also do private galas for businesses.

And I work as a choreographer for swimmers and teams abroad. I also do volunteer work on several committees: for Olympic athletes, in the International Swimming Federation) (FINA) and for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This year, I also became the president of my club in Aix-en-Provence, the best French artistic swimming club for 20 years. And last but not least my organisation “Virginie Dedieu Sport”, that I created in 2006 whose goal is to organise summer internships for synchronised swimming.”

YOU ARE ALSO COLLABORATING WITH DECATHLON, WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITHIN THE BRAND?

V.D.: “This partnership with Decathlon is targeted at my sport, artistic swimming. We are jointly developing educational tools for young swimmers. These are tools that either do not yet exist and we are creating them, or that we are adapting because they lack specific features for synchronised swimmers. For example, we have adapted a nose clip to suit the sport. We have worked on creating a specialised black swimsuit, required in competitions for compulsory figures.

It really made sense for me to get involved in this process. I have been a top athlete, so I know a lot about my sport. It's so interesting to be able to share knowledge and develop tools that do not yet exist.”

And more generally, what is your relationship with sport?

V.D.: “For me, sport is a need, a pleasure and an outlet! It has helped my physical and mental well-being. This is part of what my parents taught me. It has been present in my life one way or another forever. Every morning, for example, I do 10 mins of ab workouts. I also discovered pole dancing, which I do at least once a week.”

Any other passions and projects to share with us?

V.D.: I like spending time with my family by going paddling or snorkelling. I also do photography and I draw. All these parts of my life, artistic and athletic, enrich my professional activity with new opportunities: developing a show, participating in a film, taking part in team-building exercises as well as a mental coach, etc. Everything mixes with each other and completes each other!”

Veronique Estrade

Yin yoga, hiking, cycling,… (OK, on an electric bike sometimes ;-) ): I prefer slow sports. My goal is to combine well-being, escape and leisure. I also find all the artistic disciplines just marvellous. My 10 years of gym dancing probably explain this! But feeling the enthusiasm of the passionate athletes I meet is what I like most. And then sharing their enthusiasm in the tutorials and tips I write.
