INTRODUCING MY CHILD TO SWIMMING: HOW?

(2)

Professionals recommend that parents sign their children up for their first swimming lessons at around the age of six. Prior to this, children can discover the joys of water with their parents. There are many ways to teach your children the basics, starting at home for example.

LEARNING TO SWIM AT HOME, IS IT POSSIBLE?

Not all parents are required to go down the "baby swimmers" route to teach their children to swim! There are several tips on how to familiarise your child with water from an early age. To start with, if you have a bath, you can wet your child's hair, lay them on their back, blow bubbles, teach them to kick their feet..

A multitude of possibilities are available to you and your little one to help them to master the water.

Still in the bath, you can also explain to them how to breathe through their nose and mouth and then teach them to breathe in and out.

AND IN THE POOL?

If, a little before their 6th birthday, your child is comfortable enough to begin their first swimming lessons, you can ask at the swimming pool.

In order for them not to get into bad habits, we advise you to have them take a few lessons with a qualified swimming instructor.

Each child develops at their own pace but generally a minimum of fifteen sessions is necessary for learning to be complete.

The coordination of movements is very important, but the swimming instructor must also ensure that the child knows how to correctly put their head underwater and take it out again to breathe. They must also know how to open their eyes and breathe underwater.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SWIMMING FOR MY CHILD?

Teaching a child to swim will enable them to improve their psychomotor skills. Your child will be able to discover the joys of the freedom of movement underwater but also discover their body and its limits.

Swimming will also enable them to learn new vocabulary by naming the body parts used for swimming: back, legs, thighs, calves…
