Learn the breaststroke in three steps

(5)

You want to learn the breaststroke, but you don’t know where to start. You want to improve your technique and quickly see some real results.

We have the answer!

Whether you want to learn this stroke or to improve your technique, there is one really effective solution: learning (or improving) through breaststroke exercises!

These exercises are designed to highlight, and then to isolate, a specific technical aspect of the stroke. By concentrating on, and then carefully working at, this aspect, it will eventually come automatically and naturally. Then, all you have to do is admire your own performances as the “complete swimmer”!

Yannick Agnel and Camille Muffat’s former coach talks you through a simple exercise to learn the breaststroke in three separate steps:

STEP 1: THE BREASTSTROKE SCISSOR KICK ON YOUR BACK

The first step simply consists of lying on your back and putting your arms straight alongside your body. Then, start your leg movements, concentrating exclusively on your breaststroke scissor kick.

Start by making this movement on your back, so that you don’t have to worry about your breathing and can concentrate on perfecting your breaststroke scissor kick.

STEP 2: THE BREASTSTROKE SCISSOR KICK WITH A KICKBOARD

In the second step, practise your breaststroke scissor kick on your front, with the help of a kickboard. Now you can start coordinating your breathing and your movements.

Breathe out through the nose and mouth simultaneously when kicking with your legs, then breathe in by raising your head when you prepare your next scissor kick.

STEP 3: COMPLETE BREASTSTROKE

In the last step, leave your board by the poolside and practise the complete breaststroke.

The goal consists of applying what you learnt in the preceding steps. Remember to follow each of the points in order to properly coordinate your breathing with the propulsion of your legs.

Repeat these exercises in several sessions in order to quickly improve the coordination of your breaststroke movements.

As well as teaching you a new stroke and perfecting your technique, this type of educational exercise makes swimming practice more fun and breaks the monotony of swimming endless lengths!

Enjoy your practice swimming session!
