Why swim with hand paddles?

Because it is a good way to progress, but also because it is fun. This piece of equipment is often a swimmer’s ally whatever ability. Hand paddles are no exception to the rule.

We recommend you integrate them into your training sessions and do progressive activities with them, mainly for 5 good reasons. Here are some arguments that should convince you to take up using hand paddles.

REASON N°1: BECAUSE IT IS SIMPLE AND ACCESSIBLE

It is so accessible that you have no reason to miss out. A pair of hand paddles only costs a few euros. Around 10 euros to become more accurate;)


Moreover, this small piece of equipment takes up very little space and is easy to carry. Simply slip your pair of paddles into your pool bag and you're done. You'll have to do a lot of hard work and a lot of targeted training sessions.


Once you're in the pool, there's no need to move to the lane reserved for swimmers with fins. We are sure that you will not bother the other swimmers.


As well as being practical, the hand paddles are easy to use. For optimal use, simply choose the right size when you buy them. And to vary the pleasures, there are several types, all adapted to different uses.

Why swim with hand paddles?

REASON N°2: BECAUSE IT IS ADAPTED TO ALL TYPES OF SWIMMERS

No matter how many hours you spend in the pool, there is no exemption from training exercises. These small exercises, useful for progressing, with regard to all swimmers, because we can always improve our technique.


Evidently, this is also true for developing with swimming hand paddles. For you to adapt your additional equipment to your activities and your aims. Moreover, there are no indications against using these hand paddles.


However, I would recommend that you do not overdo it to avoid the risk of tendonitis. We assure you, these risks are minimal if you swim with your paddles in the correct way. And if you alternate lengths with and without.


As for the choice of hand paddles, it depends on your level, but also on your muscles. Here are two tips to guide you:

- If you are a beginner swimmer or if you have less muscular arms, opt for smaller hand paddles. They are also only recommended to kids over the age of 10.

The only condition is to tend to the arm movements so that the work is effective and not counterproductive. After all, the aim stays the same, to improve your arm techniques, regardless of the stroke.

A good habit to get into consists of warming up your muscles and doing some lengths without the equipment before starting to swim with your paddles. The idea is above all not to take the risk of injuring yourself. And, we insist, there is no question of devoting an entire session to swimming with hand paddles. Alternate training and enjoyment!

Finally, your paddles can be used with other equipment. You can for example, use a pull buoy placed between the thighs to not use the legs and only concentrate on the arm strokes.

REASON N°4: BECAUSE IT STRENGTHENS THE UPPER BODY

With hand paddles, resistance is very important, we pull more water simply because the surface area is larger. It is good news, above all for your muscles. Mainly those in your upper body, arms and forearms.

The other good news (or not so good news, depending on who you are) is that swimming with hand paddles provides a gentle and deep workout. As you already know, swimming mainly builds muscle in the long term. As it stretches the muscle, even with hand paddles. One last tip, if building up your arms is your main goal: use bigger paddles, except if you have less muscular arms. We recommend you therefore do muscle exercises out of the water.

Last but not least: swimming hand paddles are the best allies of your technique and that's what they are mainly used for. They improve your guidance, the placement of your arms and forearms and their movement before entering the water, because they allow you to better feel the sensations and correct technical errors.


For best results, use paddles that are just a little larger than your hand, or even corrective paddles. Some smaller paddles even allow you to work on specific supports by isolating only a part of your hand.


Once you have your hand paddles on, do a few lengths, without focusing on the time, so that you can concentrate solely on your support and technique. Then remove your paddles and try to reproduce the correct techniques. You will naturally end up adopting them without even paying attention. Because the first quality of paddles is to be able to do it without them.

To finish, hand paddles are a small investment for great results. It is an available piece of equipment which is multi-purpose and adaptable to everyone which strengthens the arms and improves techniques. So there is no reason not to.
